Frequently Asked Questions

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

What is Botox?
Botox is the trade name for Botulinum toxin, which is a natural purified protein that relaxes muscles. Botox has been used for many years to treat muscular problems. It is licensed for treatment of facial and neck spasm, eye deviation, and lower limb spasticity in children as young as two years old. A very low dose of botox is used for cosmetic treatment which after much careful research and testing by allergan is ideal to treat wrinkles caused by facial muscles that have no significant function. Examples include deep crease between the eyebrows, crow’s feet wrinkles & forehead lines. Injecting these lines has been shown to be very successful. Botulinum toxin cannot cause any damage to the body, because it attaches itself to the muscle and cannot pass in to the blood stream. The action on the muscle is never permanent.

Do the injections hurt?
Botox is injected using a tiny needle. Most patients find the injection causes mild temporary discomfort but is easily tolerated. A local anaesthetic cream is used to numb the area.

How will I look after the treatment?
Immediately after the injections there may be tiny red marks and mild swelling which can be concealed with make up, and will subside within 1-2 days.

Are there any side effects?
Botox is safe in expert hands and side effects of this treatment are rare. Occasionally a transient numbness may develop in the treated area.
Temporary headache can occasionally occur. Mild temporary bruising may occur. Rarely a temporary heaviness of the eyebrow or eyelid may occur, which may only last a few weeks. If you are pregnant or breast feeding the treatment is not recommended.

How many treatments will I need?
Repeat treatments are usually needed every 4-5 months over a 12 month period to maintain a younger refreshed appearance. Some patients who have had treatments over 12 months may only require further treatment twice a year.

What are Restylane and Perlane?
Restylane and Perlane are stabilized hyaluronic acid products, which come in the form of a crystal clear gel. Hylarounic acid is a natural ingredient in the skin and works by binding water. Restylane and perlane are non-animal products, which lift and smooth wrinkles and folds.

Do the injections hurt?
Only a mild temporary discomfort can be felt which is easily tolerated, as a tiny needle is used for the injections. A local anaesthetic cream is applied prior to treatment to keep discomfort to the minimum. For lip enhancement, a local anaesthetic injection is often used.

Do I need a skin test?
No you do not need a skin test and there have been no reported patients who have experienced an allergic reaction.

Can I have Restylane and Perlane after a facial peel?
Yes but it is recommended that you wait until 4 weeks after having a facial peel.

How will I look after treatment?
After treatment you may have mild bruising and slight temporary swelling at the injection sites, which can be concealed with make up. This should settle down in a couple of days.

How long will the treatment last?
The treatment can last up to 9 months.

Are there any side effects?
Side effects are rare. 1 in every 2000 patients have reported localized reactions thought to be of a hypersensitivity nature such as swelling, redness, tenderness and rarely acne type formations. These reactions have all been reported as mild to moderate and have disappeared within two weeks.
