Treatment for Headache and Migraine
The use of Botulinum toxin for the treatment of tension headache and migraine has been reported in several studies in recent years. The benefits were discovered by accident in patients having botulinum toxin injections to smooth lines and wrinkles, and who reported significant reduction in the severity and frequency of headache.
In the year 2000 Dr Silversten published a scientific medical paper confirming the effectiveness and safety of botulinum toxin in the prevention and treatment of migraine. The treated patients showed significantly fewer migraine attacks per month, reduced migraine severity, medication use and associated vomiting. Botulinum toxin is administered with a few injections with a tiny needle into the forehead muscles. It relaxes these muscles and relieves tension headache and migraine. The treatment takes approx 15 mins and the benefits can last 4-5 months. The side effects are slight temporary redness at the injection sites and occasional bruising.
